An old city food market “Agora”, built in 1917, place of trade and social activities in the very centre of the city that faded after the 70’s with the growth of the city, has a second life. It has been refurbished and adapted to revive the old city and reinforce its identity, keeping its traditional food approach and including new activities.

Limassol Municipal Market was built in 1917. As the city expanded, the market increased its surface up to 3,000 sqm in 1947. In the 70’s the market faded due to the new shopping centres and the expansion of the city. The building-block had to be restored to keep one of the samples of public architecture in Limassol, increasing its strength against earthquakes.
The project consists in keeping in the central hall the food sellers of traditional Cypriot products sought by consumers, as well as the producers of vegetables and other kinds of local products selling them directly, by increasing the quality of their stalls and the hygienic issues.
Introduce in the other three halls new activities that would help to revitalize the city centre day and night. These activities were:
Other parts of the project included the creation of a new piazza. Public space with possibilities to organize open-air activities. The project is economically sustainable and pays back its construction cost.
