Dannieh and its sustainable development centre

Environment and Climate, Social Rights

The Dannieh Sustainable Development Centre (DSDC) was created by the Union of Dannieh Municipalities to connect, engage and empower the community by providing opportunities for personal and economic growth.

They started with 300 direct beneficiaries despite being still under development. And, they are slowly becoming a major player in the region.

Challenges addressed
  • High level of unemployment and job shortage
  • Poverty of both Lebanese and Syrian communities
  • Developing strategies to effectively achieve the Sustainable development goals and the 2030 Agenda:
      • Implement a strategic plan in coherence with the national strategy around the following 3 principles:
        • Promote the unity of the nation, the economy and the people,
        • Balanced development
        • Rational use of resources
      • Act on the migratory wave by providing incentives that encourage the people to stay and contribute to the regions’ development
      • Enhance the collaboration between Dannieh and the surrounding areas
      • Support the economic sector by ensuring an economic diversity policy and providing employment opportunities on a long-term perspective.
      • Offer a quality education that responds to the community’s needs and considers the farmers’ profile.
Main objectives
  • Offer a space for the local entrepreneurs and business owners to work, exchange their experiences, network and enhance their skills
  • Provide services to help foster job creation and contribute to the stability and growth of local businesses
  • Contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals in Dannieh area.

Project description
  • Encourage the eco-friendly practice, increase the livelihood-generation capacity and create equal opportunities for all
  • Provide several trainings in the field of Digital Literacy and Ecotourism
  • Set up an incubator office that supports the Small and Medium businesses by offering financial and technical advice for those who will require it
  • Make the Center accessible and facilitate the communication between the participants and the service providers through an advanced web page.
Impact and results
  • The DSDC has implemented 3 programs within the Local Development Program for Urban Areas in the north of Lebanon in partnership with GIZ on behalf of BMZ and with substantial co-funding from EU:
    • Dannieh Ecotourism Entrepreneurial Trail (with Injaz)
    • Digital and media literacy training program (with DOT)
    • Quality control training (with GIZ) – Still going on

 

  • Through their programs and activities, the DSDC has:
    • Provided young people with financial skills, entrepreneurship and business development
    • Increased the economic capacity for small community and home businesses
    • Created work opportunities
    • Empowered women to generate income from their hospitality business
    • Engaged youth in income generating enterprises
    • Generated innovative business ideas with a positive impact on their community and how to market it using the internet and social media channels.

 

Until today, more than 500 beneficiaries from youth and women have participated in DSDC trainings and be trained.
