Project description

The City Council of Málaga promoted the creation of the Urban Environment Observatory, as a result of the joint work with the URB-AL Program. The OMAU aims to continue the work in terms of urban environment.

Its main objective is to monitor the environmental indicators of the city of Málaga and partner cities. In the case of Málaga, the indicators are directly related to the implementation of the Urban Agenda 21 in 2006. For the rest of the partner cities, the used system is Integrated Urban Indicator System, which started with 37 indicators and was carried out together with UN-HABITAT from United Nations.

The monitoring indicators are a useful tool to analyse urban environmental situations in different timeframes, to know if the proposed objectives and challenges in the Agenda 21 are accomplished.

The OMAU has collected and analysed data from the environmental indicators, since the first URB-AL Program in 1995. The comparison and analysis of data is available on their website, and there is also available an interactive map of Málaga that shows the data.
