In urban areas, only 5% of rainwater infiltrates into the ground compared to 25% in natural areas. By depaving, the Metropolis of Lyon wishes to reverse the trend by helping to maintain soil humidity.
Since 2015, aware of the benefits that these changes could bring, the Metropolis of Lyon has been involved in the “Permeable City” project. The depaving strategy of the Metropolis of Lyon was reinforced during the metropolitan council of March 14th 2022. A budget of more than 18 million euros has been allocated by the Metropolis to finance the depaving of 400 hectares by 2026. Actions have already been decided, some to be applied in public spaces, buildings or even private spaces such as commercial areas.
This guide was established for the officers of the Metropolis of Lyon and their service providers whose mission is to develop a public space (creation or requalification) or a private area affected by the construction of blocks and who have to deal with the rainwater issue. It aims to support at all stages the development project, from design to operation. Through concrete examples, it raises awareness on the steps to be taken according to the progress of the project.
