CasesData & ICTSmall cityUtc

As part of the MOBILITAS project, a new traffic information system has been developed in Koper. This platform enables mobility data sharing and public transport enhancement, unifying data transfer from different traffic monitoring and management systems into a single one: the traffic information system.

Challenges addressed
  • Air and noise pollution.
  • Traffic congestions.
  • Excessive use of private cars.
  • Lack of public transport coordination and information.
Main objectives
  • Reduce traffic congestions
  • Improve the environmental conditions

Project description

The new traffic information system installed in Koper has enhanced capabilities for traffic monitoring, management and analysis. It comprises: (a) installation of GPS on buses and monitors in real-time; (b) at bus stops, information promoting public transport use; (c) creation of smart parking system with sensors for recording occupancy/availability of parking spaces; (d) development of mobile applications for journey planning and real-time information; (e)  and upgrade of traffic information centre.

Mobility App gives an overview of the road situation enabling better traffic management and cooperation with the national information centre, reducing traffic and CO2 emissions increasing the use of public transport.

MOBILITAS PROJECT

MOBILITAS provides policymakers and stakeholders with appropriate tools to deal with the effects of intensive tourism.
Areas that receive important visitor flows suffer excessive pressure on their mobility infrastructures and means of transport. This overload entails negative effects in terms of air pollution, noise, health , road insecurity, and therefore loss of city attractiveness. The temporality of the flows is also an aspect that needs to be considered since most of the visits are concentrated in summer or during specific events.
The main objective of the project is to elaborate scenarios to enable policymakers and other stakeholders taking the right decisions regarding future transport planning.
The project’s outputs are: (a) the elaboration of Future Mobility Scenarios in 9MED touristic regions (b) To pilot actions using IT tools applied to sustainable tourism mobility and electric and sharing mobility solutions. (c) The elaboration of a Sustainable Tourism Mobility Handbook.

Impact and results
  • The action carried out provides the ability to integrate all traffic data in the traffic information centre, which distributes the information to the citizens and users in order to make better use of public transport and change mobility habits.
