Challenges addressed
  • Promoting the use of energy from renewable sources
  • Streamlining flows and energy consumption
  • Energy efficiency and development of new products and services for the citizen
  • Awareness on energy consumption
  • Raising awareness on environmental issues
  • Participation in the development path of the Smart City
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions in a 30% by 2020
Main objectives
  • Take decisions on energy efficiency and budget assignments by using an Urban Control Centre: Data gathering from distributed sensors and home/building monitoring systems that will convey into a supply of information about resources and energy consumption, and manage urban energy dynamics
  • Smart User Network electrical island, which integrates sources of renewable energy production and storage systems.

Project description

Bari’s PAES first and core aspect in energy management that has been developed is the Urban Control Energy Centre: a Platform for monitoring/managing urban dynamics.

The Centre receives the information of the system, processes it and present its results-conclusions, is a tool to support energy governance The second issue that belongs to the PAES is the bi-level architecture of the system, with both the energy managers and the facilities managers involved. The main system issues focused are the street lighting subsystem and the public building system. How to manage their budget it is a typical energy manager decision problem in city energy budget management. New sectors or sub sectors of energy consumption can be included in the next future.

In a coordinated way the setting up of an efficient energy network, that can collect the required data, as well as other data, has been achieved in other parts of the city, in Sant Paolo eco-sustainable neighbourhood and power-park.

Other aspects of the information provided by the Centre are related strategic planning and decision making for public and private sector. The Centre is very interesting for the community and citizens that are involved in environmental matters.

Finally, a smart City Competency Centre, a research centre where the new operating scenarios of low- voltage network will be monitored, studied and analysed.
