DESCRIPTION

The document at hand is designed to provide an integrative methodological framework and planning guidelines to assist administrations and others to aid the development and convergence of assimilated solution-oriented coastal management approaches and plans, as requested by the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Protocol for the Mediterranean. The ICZM Protocol promotes the environmental protection and integration of the Mediterranean. The document consists of two major parts. The first one represents an in-depth approach to integrate the various approaches that exist for coastal zone management, taking into account their integrated design, holistic nature, and depicting clearly the synergies and overlaps between existing frameworks and approaches. The second part contains the newly created IMF which was created in the first step and focuses on the 5 planning process and its five stages. In doing so, it offers a high level of detail and guidance on peculiarities of each stage. Finally, the document offers 4 key lessons on the process:

  • The convergence of approaches is key
  • There is a high value of the Drivers-Pressures-State-Impacts-Responses (DPSIR) framework as a tool for integration
  • Operational practicalities should remain lean
  • The focus is on delivering results

RELEVANCE

In the light of the growing impact of climate change on the environment, including rising sea levels, coastal management maintains its pivotal role in protecting cities and the environment.
