AMBici, the metropolitan public bicycle sharing service
In 2023, the metropolitan public bicycle-sharing service, called AMBbici, came into operation. Initially, the AMBici was launched in three municipalities: Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí and Cornellà de Llobregat. It is expected that by 2024 the service will have a fleet of 2,600 electric bicycles, distributed by 236 stations, which will be located in 15 municipalities: l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, el Prat de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Sant Just Desvern, Molins de Rei, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Viladecans, Gavà, Castelldefels, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí and Cornellà de Llobregat.
The AMBici is integrated with the collective public transport system of the metropolis of Barcelona, which will facilitate intermodality with other means of public transport, such as the Metropolitan Bus, the metro, the tram, the railway, etc

Challenges addressed
- The AMBici was born to create the maximum of possible synergies with the public transport system of the metropolis of Barcelona. The main measure to achieve this goal will be to locate some stations in the closest environment to high-demand public transport stations. This will facilitate intermodality between means of public transport, such as the Metropolitan Bus, the metro, the tram, the railway, etc…
- Physical borders between metropolitan municipalities are removed, with the integration of the new service with the Bicing system in Barcelona, a consolidated system with more than 135,000 subscribers
Main objectives
- To reach a cleaner and healthier mobility whose demand continues to grow and which should help citizens deal with the energy and climate crisis.
- Thanks to a metropolitan pass and the planned transfer stations, the system aims to achieve the maximum possible integration between the metropolitan AMBici and Bicing system established in Barcelona.
- The AMBici, which has been partially financed with Next Generation funds, will be complementary to public transport, facilitating intermodality
- Create a real tool for fighting climate change based on the modernization and transformation of public transport to achieve more sustainable mobility

It is a project funded with 7 million euros by the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and represents a new impetus to enhance and facilitate sustainable mobility options in the metropolis of Barcelona.
Impact and results
- In March 2024, one year after its premiere, the AMBici exceeds 22,000 users and 1.8 million trips and arrives in Sant Adrià de Besòs
