About Coastal Cities MedCities Working Group session in Barcelona (September 2024):
MedCities and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) organise an exchange visit to address the challenges posed by the biodiversity and climate crisis to coastal resilience in the context of the Horizon Europe Project GUARDEN.
This visit takes place within the framework of the MedCities Coastal Cities Working Group which, with the support of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, is offering exchange and capacity-building activities for members of the network.
The project GUARDEN (Safeguarding Biodiversity and Critical Ecosystem Services Across Sectors and Scales) aims to safeguard biodiversity and its contribution to the well-being of people, putting them at the forefront of policies and decision-making.
In the metropolitan area of Barcelona, the objective is to evaluate the impact of current and future coastal management actions and strategies on biodiversity and ecosystems. The dune areas of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona are more extensive after the restoration and protection process carried out by the AMB and one of the major challenges to be addressed in the monitoring of urban beaches is that they require flows of environmental information and of biodiversity very difficult and expensive to obtain. This knowledge is proposed to be obtained in the project through citizen participation.
Other that exchanging on this experience, participants will have the opportunity to meet and exchange other key stakeholders and initiatives:
