Short Bio

“Dan Lewis, former Chief of the Urban Risk Reduction Unit of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is an international expert on urban resilience. He has been working for UN-Habitat since 1997 and has managed the global portfolio of disaster and conflict related work of the Agency since 2002. As well, he has worked in urban reconstruction and housing programmes in Canada, South Africa, Somalia, Kosovo, and Chile. He has until recently, led the development of UN-Habitats’ global City Resilience Profiling Programme, based in Barcelona, designing new standards and methodologies for measuring and monitoring urban resilience, and is now leading Westcoast International, a consulting organization focusing on support to urban stakeholders, academia and the private sector in their ambitions to contribute to enhancing resilience in human settlements facing challenges from climate change, social and economic risk, and natural hazards.”
