MedCities presented the results of the ProcuraMED project, highlighting how strategic public procurement can accelerate the adoption of green and innovative technologies across Mediterranean cities. The project partners shared the outcomes achieved in eight pilot territories and introduced a new Memorandum of Understanding to create a Euro-Mediterranean Strategic Procurement Coalition.
This coalition aims to reinforce innovation capacities among local authorities and enterprises, promote green technologies, and foster a more sustainable regional economy. It is designed as a permanent platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and joint action between public and private actors committed to advancing sustainable procurement.
A dedicated roundtable brought together municipalities and private-sector representatives to discuss the need to move beyond lowest-price criteria in public procurement in order to drive innovation and circularity. Participants showcased practical tools such as the Strategic Procurement Unified Platform and shared real examples, including Viladecans’ work on integrating environmental clauses into municipal service contracts through ProcuraMED’s training and mentoring programme.
Overall, the initiative sends a clear message: public spending can become a powerful driver of greener, more innovative industries when it prioritises value, sustainability and long-term impact.
During the SCEWC, a series of interviews was conducted with experts from project partners to highlight specific cases and tools on Green Public Procurement (GPP) and Public Procurement of Innovation (PPI).
