DESCRIPTION
The present document represents a comprehensive and integrated approach to urban transport, taking into account the special features of the Mediterranean context.
Developed out of an expert analysis and a regional seminar on the topic, the Guide is meant to be a true decision-making aid tool for the implementation of technical, financial, and economically viable urban transport solutions offering mobility alternatives that are compatible with the protection of the environment, the reduction of inequalities, and a better use of energy resources.
It offers practical insights with a high level of detail on a wide range of key aspects, including transport institutions, planning, financing, and pricing; traffic management, parking policy and capacity building. Moreover, it sets out guidelines for challenges that are especially relevant to transport systems in the Mediterranean context, such as choosing a mass transport system for a public transport network, or introducing a regulatory system for small-scale “traditional” transport.
Relevance
All large cities are confronted with rapid urban growth, most often combined with expanding urbanization. These trends generate increased mobility demands and a strong need for transport infrastructure, especially in the Mediterranean context.
