The Advisory on Public and Community Toilets offers a technical manual on the design of toilets in the public realm. Distinguishing between Community Toilets (i.e. shared between a relatively steady population of users) and Public Toilets (i.e. a floating population, for example at a transit stop), the document guides the reader through all stages of the planning, design and construction processes. Moreover, it offers advice on the operation and maintenance of these units, taking into account principles of management and sustainability. A key concept embedded in the tool is paying special attention to the needs of women and handicapped people in using a bathroom outside their home, thus allowing them to better participate in public life.
This document was showcased as a key outcome of the 2018 Global Toilet Summit in Mumbai, India, which is a global reference event on issues of hygiene and water sanitation. The topic of access to decent sanitation is a highly relevant issue in many countries around the world, including countries from the Mediterranean region.
