DESCRIPTION

The Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) policy toolkit developed by switchmed complements the UNEP’s ‘Planning for Change Methodology’ to the Mediterranean context. SCP policies have the decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation as their principal objective. Achieving SCP patterns will sustain improvements in economic development and human welfare that we depend on, including improvements in health and education. The toolkit has been designed as a multi-component programme to facilitate the shift toward SCP in the Southern Mediterranean Region, providing policy makers and representatives of local and national administrations with effective tools, instruments and lessons learned that can help create local and national SCP policies.

The toolkit explores the concept of ‘mainstreaming,’ and offers various insightful case studies on successful implementation of SCP policies. In doing so, it retains focus on the sectors of food and agriculture, goods manufacturing, tourism, housing and construction. Beyond this, the toolkit includes an extensive list of connected resources for readers interested to dive deeper into the matter.

RELEVANCE

Given current consumption and production patterns, it is of great importance to provide impulses to think about alternatives to the current model that are less harmful for the environment.
